Are these cake kits suitable for beginners?
Absolutely. These kits are specifically designed to guide you through the baking and decorating steps. We include a description as well as photos to guide you step by step.
Do I need baking experience?
No, you don't, however, a little bit of baking experience will help you. For those that are new to baking and want to give it a go, our preprepared ingredients and easy to follow instructions are there to guide you through the process.
We recommend that you read your instructions completely (tips and info included) before starting so you have a good understanding of what you will be creating.
Are your baking kits suitable for children?
We all know kids love to bake, that’s a fact! Our kits can be enjoyed by the little ones too, we just recommend supervision by an adult, as some of our kit contents may be harmful to young children.
I've started making the cake but I'm stuck, what should I do?
Firstly, don't panic, you got this! Feel free to reach out to us directly, and/or join our Clever Caker's Facebook support group where other bakers might be able to assist.

Do you offer custom cake kits?
Yes, we do. Contact us at howdy@clevercrumb.com.au to discuss your idea further.
Please note we do not sell cake kits designed with copyrighted images as this is illegal, however we can customise a cake to your theme using colours and decorations. We recommend you buy licensed figurines/images to add onto these cakes.

Cake kits
What ingredients will I need?
All you will need is eggs, milk, oil and butter.
Note: this will differ for vegan cake kits.
What tools do you provide and what will I need?
We have made a real effort to ensure you need as little as possible to create our cakes and so that you are not having to add extra costs for decorating tools. Each cake kit product page will tell you exactly what you need, and most of the time this includes a large mixing bowl, a hand/electric whisk and measuring cups.
What sort of quality can I expect?
It is our mission to bring our expertise in the cake decorating space to our cake kits, and with that, knowing what quality is out there and what tools work best. We supply only products that we too use for cake decorating.
How do these disposable cake pans work?
These disposable paper cake pans make baking and cleaning up a dream. No need to source expensive cake pans, no greasing required, can go in the oven up to temperatures of 220 (we bake at 160) and they hold their shape beautifully. Once your cake is ready, simply remove the cake pan by peeling it away from the cake and place in the bin.
How early can I purchase my kit?
Our kit ingredients have best before dates of 3-6 months. If your celebration is within 3 months time then you can order your kit now.
If your celebration is greater than 3 months away, you can still order it now, just make sure you tell us the date you require it so that we can ensure the ingredients are suitable for the date you require it.
Alternatively, we can schedule the cake kit to be sent to you closer to the time required. Just let us know in our order notes at check out.
When is the best time to make the cake?
We recommend the day before its required, that way you can take your time and won't feel the stress on the day of celebration. This is totally up to you though and what you’re comfortable with. Just make sure you put aside enough time as recommended on our instruction cards.
How long does it take to make the cake?
Each cake kit will have varied completion times, ranging from 2 to 5 hours. For those more involved designs, we recommend splitting up the baking and decorating activities over two days or bake the cake weeks ahead and freeze it until you are ready to decorate it.
What’s the shelf life of the cake kit?
Our cake kits have relatively short best before dates, so if you’re wanting a cake kit in advance, please get in touch with us at howdy@clevercrumb.com.au so that we can organise something that suits your needs.
How do I store my cake kit, freshly baked cake and decorated cake?Cake kits should be stored in a clean dry place, out of direct sunlight.
Freshly baked cakes can bewrapped in glad wrap/sealed in an airtight container and frozen ahead of time or left at room temperature overnight.
Your decorated cake can sit at room temperature, covered and out of direct sunlight.
How long does my decorated cake last?
Our cakes are good for a week, however, they are best consumed on day two, where flavours are at their best and products at their freshest.
Ingredients & Dietary
Where can I find nutritional and ingredients information?
All of our cake kit product pages have a link to that kits specific nutritional information. You can also visit the 'kit info' section from the main menu where you can find our nutritional information. We also physically label all of our cake kit contents to Australian food standards.
Are the cake kits vegan-friendly?
We have a selection of vegan-friendly cake kits, so long as you choose our vegan cake mix option and follow our vegan icing mix recipe. Any part of the kit (confectionery or sprinkles) that is not vegan, will be substituted for something similar that is vegan.
Are the cake kits gluten-free?
We do provide gluten-free cake mixes, icing and alternative confectionery that is gluten-free, where possible. Please note that all of our kits are packaged in a facility that handles wheat and nut products. This means that our cake kits may contain traces of gluten and are therefore not suitable for people that have Coeliac Disease.
Are your kits nut-free?
Although most of our ingredients do not contain nuts, many of our product items may contain traces of nuts due to being packed in a facility that also handles nuts, therefore we do not recommend our kits to those with serious allergies.
Are your kits dairy-free?
Our vegan cake kits are all dairy-free, so long as you choose our vegan cake mix option and follow our vegan icing mix recipe. Any part of the kit (confectionery or sprinkles) that is not dairy-free, will be substituted for something similar that is suitable. Please ensure you let us know in your order comments that your kit needs to be dairy-free only.
Are your kits gluten-free and dairy-free?
We can provide you with a recipe using our gluten-free cake mixes that is dairy-free. Please get in touch if this is something that you're interested in.
Dog Cake Kits
Are these cakes suitable for pets and humans?
Our doggy cake kits are intended for doggy consumption only.
Are your cake kit ingredients safe for dogs consumption?
All of the ingredients we use in our kits have been approved for dogs.

If you are unsure if our ingredients are suitable for your pooch, always seek advice with a licensed professional before purchasing.
Do you use chocolate in some of your kits, isn't this toxic to dogs?Although it looks like the chocolate us humans like to enjoy (that is toxic for dogs), it's actually carob, a plant derived product that is completely safe for dogs to eat.
Are your dog cake recipes sugar free?
Our dog cakes are sugar-free, however we do add a small amount of natural honey or maple syrup to our recipe for flavour.
How big is the finished cake?
Mini 4-inch round double layered cake (10cm).
How much cake should I give my dog?These cakes should be considered as a dog treat only and should not be used as a meal replacement. Portion sizes will differ depending on the size of your dog.
How long does a dog cake last for and how should I store it?
Undecorated, the baked dog cake will last 5 days in an airtight container at room temperature or 3 months frozen.
Once decorated (iced), we recommend that your pooch consume the cake within 3 days. Store the iced cake in the refrigerator in a well sealed airtight container to keep it from drying out.
Cake Toppers
What are you cake toppers made of?
All of our cake toppers are made of wood.
Are they included in the cake kit?Cake toppers are an additional item and will cost extra. We have competitively priced out cake toppers so that they are affordable and accessible to everyone.
Do you offer custom made cake toppers?
Yes we do. Please ensure you order ahead of time as the lead time for a custom design is 7 business days.
Decorating Tools
Do I need to purchase the angled cake spatula?No you don't, you can spread icing just fine with a plain old butter knife, plus we provide you with a cake smoother in your kit. This is an optional extra that makes icing and smoothing your cake that little bit easier and is a nice addition to any cake decorators tool kit.
Delivery
Where do you ship?
We ship to Australia and New Zealand.
Why can't some cake kits be delivered to New Zealand?Due to customs restrictions some of our decorations (dried flowers) cannot be sent to NZ.
When should I have the cake kit delivered?
Taking into consideration delivery times, ensure you purchase your kit at least two weeks before the required date.
For our kiwi friends, we recommend you order at least three weeks prior.
When will my cake kit arrive?
Please allow 3 business days for your order to be packed and dispatched, plus the time for shipping. If there are any delays in packing your order, we will ensure we let you know.
Please note, shipping to remote areas of Australia may take up to 12 days and shipping to New Zealand can take 14-20 days. See our shipping policy for more details.
Do you allow pick ups?
No we don't allow pick ups. Delivery only.
Am I eligible for local delivery?
If you're within 3 kms from us you're eligible for this delivery service. This will be automatically offered to you at checkout.
Can I track my box?
Yes, you can. We will provide you with those details via email upon dispatch.
Who delivers the mail?
We use large reputable delivery companies to deliver our goods to you so you can have confidence your package will arrive as expected.
What are my shipping options and what do you charge for shipping?
We offer standard flat rate shipping per cake kit within Australia and to New Zealand ensuring there are no nasty shipping surprises at checkout. See our shipping policy for more information.
I've received my tracking number but it's not showing up on the courier's website, what should I do?
Sometimes it can take up to 24 hours before you may see the tracking details, so please check back the next day. If you still don't see anything, please email us at howdy@clevercrumb.com.au and we will assist as best as we can.
What do I do if I never received my order?
In the first instance, contact the shipping company directly and quote your tracking number. Please also contact us at howdy@clevercrumb.com.au so that we can help you with your issue.
What do I do if I received a defective order?
If the defect was caused by delivery, please contact the shipping company directly regarding your issue. Please also contact us at howdy@clevercrumb.com.au so that we can help you with your issue.
Billing & Payment
Can I update/change my delivery address?You can if your cake kit has not been dispatched. Contact us athowdy@clevercrumb.com.au.
Can I change my order once it has been paid for?
Due to the quick 1-3 business day dispatch, the process of hand packing you order starts the moment your order is paid. Please take a moment to check over your order in the shopping cart before proceeding to the checkout. If for unforeseen reasons you need to change your order, we can do this if your order has not been dispatched.
What payment options do you accept?
Our secure shopping cart accepts credit/debit card payments from Visa, MasterCard, Amex, and you can also pay through G-Pay, ApplePay, Paypal and AfterPay.
What is your refund & returns policy?
We do not accept returned cake kits due to the nature of handling perishable food. In the unlikely event that you are unhappy with the quality of your purchase, please send an email to howdy@clevercrumb.com.au. Please also see our return policy for more details.
Please note, for hygiene reasons, cake toppers and decorating tools purchased separately through our website are nonexchangeable nor refundable (unless defective).
Discounts
Do you offer discounts on your products?
You will rarely see our kits on sale as we price all of our kits at the most competitive price we can, giving you value all year round.
Sometimes we do exclusive discounts through our email newsletters so we highly recommend you sign up and get your free icing bowl scraper too.
Opting to remove items from your kit
Can I remove items I already have from my last order?
Yes! Let's minimise waste together.
If you are a return customer and don't need another rolling pin or cake scraper included in your next purchase you can now have these omitted from your kit and save $$ using these codes at checkout: RHWRP (remove the rolling pin), RSCPR (remove the cake scraper). Codes only apply to kits that have these items. Codes may be used together in one purchase. For return customers only.
Can I use my own cake recipe and just buy the decorating portion of the kit?
Yes! Simply use code REMOVEMIX at checkout to have the cake mix omitted from you kit. You will still receive the icing mix and cake pans. By using this code, you agree to having the cake mix removed from your kit in place of a discount. This means that you will need to source your own cake ingredients and recipe. We cannot offer baking advice on recipes used that are not our own.
